I'm always happy to leave some fruit on the ground for wildlife to gorge on over winter, particularly if that fruit is quinces (which I still have no idea what to do with given that I don't eat cheese).

In the spring I will walk around the base of the fruit trees picking up any fruit that may have succumbed to brown rot in the hope that if I can get the desiccated fruits before they bloat up with the spring rains, I can avoid some of the spread of spores.
